A year after attaining Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) status, Armormax has detailed its newly developed Security Variant based on the Ford Ranger Double Cab. This project originated from a significant client request for B6-protected vehicles, specifically tasking Armormax with the development.

The client required a patrol and intercept vehicle capable of resisting assault rifle fire from multiple attackers in challenging off-road environments. Key requirements included handling difficult terrain, managing extra equipment weight, providing operators with clear visibility for night operations, and maintaining a highly discreet appearance that does not reveal its security or armoured nature. Long-term reliability and robustness were also critical.

Achieving this level of protection without visual cues typically demands avoiding external armour. Armormax's approach extended this principle to ensure minimal intrusion on the vehicle's functions, dynamics, and aesthetics, both inside and out. This involves lightweight armouring, factory-fit ballistic glass, and retaining all original exterior panels.

Balancing the need for a robust, permanently off-road capable vehicle with discreet design presented a significant challenge. Armormax focused on integrating both approaches without compromising either, resulting in a total conversion weight of 519 kg.

Protection is provided by a combination of internationally sourced Ramor and Armox ballistic steel for internal areas (doors, pillars, firewalls, etc.), achieving B6 level. Crucially, no structural mounting points or load-bearing chassis elements are altered. The floor and roof use lightweight composites meeting B6 standards. The fuel tank features Armorcote coating for self-sealing, while the battery and ECU are shielded with composite material.

The B6 ballistic windscreen from Optima matches the standard Ford unit cosmetically. Side windows use custom-fitted Phoenix B6 ballistic glass within bolt-on ballistic steel frames, facilitating maintenance. The original windows remain in place, though inoperable, preserving the factory look. The rear window, also Phoenix B6 glass on a ballistic steel frame, incorporates a quick-release system serving as an emergency escape hatch, usable regardless of the vehicle's position.

For operational capability, two rear doors and the front passenger door feature bespoke sliding gun ports, ergonomically positioned for operator comfort and accommodating assault firearms. These were selected over traditional glass ports for enhanced discretion.

Visibility systems address operational needs. High-powered LED light bars on a premium roof rack illuminate sides and rear when discretion is secondary. A front-mounted, high-powered rotating spotlight, operable via portable remote, offers 360-degree movement. White strobe lights are concealed within the front grille and taillights. A roof-mounted infrared camera, linked to an interior tablet, aids detection in darkness or concealed threats and allows low-speed driving without visible light, with recording capability.

These systems, along with a PA system with integrated siren and an internal Push To Talk communication system, are powered by a secondary battery featuring an integrated REDARC charger.

Mobility is enhanced with an adjustable heavy-duty Old Man Emu suspension upgrade, calibrated for various terrains and loads to improve off-road stability and agility. Military-grade Duraflat run-flat systems on each wheel allow continued mobility even with complete tyre deflation.

Marketing Manager Michael Broom stated: "We believe we have met the vehicle requirements, successfully integrating both protection and discretion. This results in a practical, functional, and durable vehicle providing our client with a solution for their operational objectives and operator safety. We anticipate strong interest from the security industry."

Based on the 2.0 Turbo Diesel XL 4x4 Automatic, the upgrade is available for most Ford Ranger Double Cab models (excluding Raptor due to GVM). The Ford QVM program ensures the conversion does not affect the standard manufacturer warranty or service plans. Additional fitments were sourced from other Ford QVM partners. The total package cost is R1 043 478 excluding VAT and the base vehicle. A three-year warranty covers armouring components and workmanship.
