The new 1 Series, stretching 4?361?mm (up 42?mm) with a 2?670?mm wheelbase, sports a lower, bolder grille flanked by adaptive LED headlights (optional with matrix beams). The 2 Series Gran Coupé leans into sportiness, flaunting a ‘Hofmeister kink’ rear window branded with a ‘2’. Both models promise cabin quietness – a boon for SA’s battered roads – and interiors dominated by BMW’s iDrive system with QuickSelect controls, gaming integration and enhanced parking aids.

Under the bonnet, the three-cylinder 1,5-litre (115?kW/230?Nm) powers the 118 and 135 variants, delivering what BMW calls a “refined, un-three-like” drive. For adrenaline seekers, the M135 xDrive and M235 xDrive pack a 2,0-litre four-cylinder punch (233?kW/400?Nm), rocketing from 0-100?km/h in “a blink”. Yet, test drives hinted the 118’s balance of efficiency and composure – crucial for dodging potholes – might be the pragmatic pick.

Both models tout recycled materials and energy-efficient production, aligning with BMW’s reduced-emissions pledge. Neo Sibeko, BMW’s Compact Class Product Manager, notes: “These cars marry driver passion with planet-conscious progress – from chassis tweaks to smart tech.”

With SA’s road realities in mind, BMW’s blend of financial flexibility, pothole-ready poise and petrol-fed verve positions the 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupé as compelling contenders in the premium compact arena.
