Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has officially introduced its new Dolphin Surf model to the South African market, a move aimed at broadening the appeal of electric mobility for local motorists. The vehicle is positioned within the mass-market segment, with the intention of demonstrating that electric cars can be both practical and attainable.
The Dolphin Surf is available in two variants: the Dynamic and the Comfort. Both are designed as front-wheel drive vehicles, presenting a option for urban drivers interested in zero-emission transport.

Central to the car's engineering is BYD’s Blade Battery technology and its e-Platform 3.0 chassis. The body structure incorporates a high proportion of high-strength steel, which is intended to contribute to occupant safety and driving comfort.
The Dynamic model is fitted with a 38.8 kWh battery, providing a WLTP-certified range of 295 kilometres. Its motor produces 55 kW of power and it supports DC fast charging at up to 40 kW, enabling a charge from 30% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. The Comfort variant features a 30 kWh battery with a range of 232 km (WLTP) and has a maximum DC charging rate of 30 kW. Both models are equipped with 16-inch steel wheels.

A 7-inch digital instrument cluster and voice activation via the command ‘Hi, BYD’ are also standard. Practical features include a 15W wireless charging pad and an integrated karaoke function.
The exterior design incorporates a integrated rear spoiler, full-width LED tail-lights, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The car offers a number of interior storage compartments and a boot capacity of 230 litres, which can be expanded to 930 litres with the rear seats folded. Access is facilitated by keyless entry using an NFC card or a smartphone app.
A notable feature is the Vehicle-to-Load (VtoL) function, which allows the car's battery to power external electrical devices. Each purchase includes a 7 kW home charger wall box and a portable charger.
