Chery South Africa has confirmed it will introduce a new double cab bakkie to global markets, signalling the company’s move into a highly contested segment. The model, known internally as the KP31, is expected to reach local showrooms towards the end of 2026 or early 2027.
The KP31 will launch with a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, which Chery says will be a first for the segment. The system pairs a 2,5-litre turbo-diesel engine with electric drive components aimed at improving torque delivery, fuel efficiency and overall refinement.

The bakkie is built on the Kaitan ladder-frame chassis, a new platform developed to accommodate internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and fully electric drivetrains. The structure has been engineered with a focus on strength, durability and flexibility for different applications.
Chery is targeting a 1 000 kg payload and a braked towing capacity of up to 3 500 kg. The load bin has been shaped to maximise usable space, with minimal intrusion from the wheel arches, and will support cab-chassis conversions.
The production version is set to include front, centre and rear locking differentials, a low?range transfer case and several off?road driving modes. A tight?turn assist function has also been previewed to help the vehicle manoeuvre in confined or technical terrain.
Other functional additions include underbody protection, integrated recovery points and a raised air intake. After the diesel plug?in hybrid model launches, Chery plans to add a petrol powered plug-in hybrid option to the range.

Verene Petersen, Chery South Africa’s National Marketing Manager, said the KP31 forms part of the brand’s broader global product strategy. According to Petersen, the pick-up segment remains important in many markets, and the new model has been developed to meet customer expectations around durability, versatility and capability.
She added that the diesel plug-in hybrid system reflects Chery’s continued investment in new energy technologies across its lineup.
