Lexus South Africa has introduced the new RZ, the brand's first purpose-built battery electric vehicle (BEV) to be offered globally. The model represents a step in the company's transition toward an electrified line-up.

The RZ is built on a dedicated electric platform rather than adapting existing internal combustion engine architecture. According to the brand, this approach has informed the vehicle's proportions, weight distribution and structural rigidity. Electrification now serves as the foundation for the Lexus driving experience, influencing both design and engineering decisions.

The company first entered the local electrified market with the RX Hybrid in 2008. This was followed by the introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in 2023. The RZ now extends that strategy with a model engineered exclusively as a BEV from the outset.

The dedicated electric architecture keeps the spindle body concept, while aerodynamic elements have been integrated to manage airflow.

The South African line-up consists of four derivatives:

• RZ 500e EX
• RZ 500e SE
• RZ 550e F SPORT
• RZ 600e F SPORT Performance (to be introduced later)

All models come standard with DIRECT4 intelligent all-wheel drive, which manages torque distribution across the front and rear axles. The RZ 500e EX serves as the entry point to the range, while the SE grade adds upgraded interior materials and additional technology. The RZ 550e F SPORT introduces performance-focused features and chassis technologies. The forthcoming RZ 600e F SPORT Performance will sit at the top of the range.

The cabin of the RX follows the Tazuna concept

The cabin follows Lexus' Tazuna concept, which positions controls and displays within the driver's natural field of vision. A shift-by-wire system replaces the traditional gear selector with a rotary dial.

Seating materials vary by grade. The EX model features synthetic leather in Hazel or Grayscale. The SE grade upgrades to patterned Ultrasuede. The RZ 550e F SPORT includes sport seats with additional lateral support in Black and Dark Grey Ultrasuede. The forthcoming RZ 600e F SPORT Performance will feature Black Ultrasuede with patterned detailing.

A Lexus-first radiant heating system uses infrared panels to warm occupants directly, which the company says consumes approximately 8% less energy than conventional heating. The system is designed to warm the cabin more efficiently in cold conditions.

In SE and F SPORT models, the specification includes a 14-inch Full HD multimedia display, a 13-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, a Head-Up Display and a digital rear-view mirror. A dimming panoramic roof, wireless charging and heated front and rear seats are also included at these specification levels.

The RZ 500e EX and SE are powered by a 74,6 kWh lithium-ion battery and produce 280 kW. The RZ 550e F SPORT uses a 76,9 kWh battery and delivers 300 kW. All derivatives are fitted with a 22 kW onboard charger as standard.

Battery pre-conditioning prepares the battery for charging when a charging station is set as a destination, reducing charge times in colder conditions. In such scenarios, a 10% to 80% charge can be completed in approximately 30 minutes.
