The Great Train Race, a truly special South African heritage event, is coming back on Saturday, September 27, at the Heidelberg Railway Station in Gauteng. This will be the 10th year for the event, and it lines up with Heritage Month.

A key feature is the exciting recreation of the famous 1930 race between Woolf Barnato’s Bentley Speed Six and Le Train Bleu. Paysure Brokers is the main sponsor and helped bring back this tradition. Because of them, the event will keep bringing together collectors, families and fans for a day filled with heritage, engineering and fun.

More than 100 classic cars, motorcycles, airplanes and a big steam train will be on display. The best part is a live-streamed recreation of the iconic 1930 race. People watching will get a rare chance to see the contest between steam power and combustion engines again.

Christopher Van, the event's founder and a historian, says: “The Great Train Race isn't just about machines. It's about keeping history alive for future generations. Each collector helps to protect a piece of our vehicle history.”

Things to Look Forward To

This year, the program includes the 'convergence' moment. This is a planned event where classic cars, motorcycles and airplanes race to meet the Rovos steam train at the platform. It includes traditional drummers, flag drops, and live commentary.

For families, there is a special kids’ area with crafts and mini steam train rides. There are also artisan markets, food trucks, live music and a Best-Dressed contest to celebrate vintage style. The performers include Afrikaans pop singer Bernice West, well-known band The Staccatos, and other traditional acts all day long.

Now, the event is run “by collectors, for collectors.” This makes sure that classic car values are protected and shared. Yuvi Jasti, event patron and co-owner of Paysure Brokers, says: “For us, the Great Train Race is about stories that connect people. It's about the stories our grandparents told, the vehicles that defined an age, and the chance to relive that history today.”

Motul South Africa is a supporter of the event. Mercia Jansen, General Manager for Southern and Eastern Africa, added: “Events like this remind us that new ideas are only helpful when you understand the past. We want to celebrate historical greatness and make sure these stories and these engines keep running. We do this through our long-term partnerships with famous events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Goodwood Revival, and by supporting local events such as The Great Train Race.”
