Love it or hate it but there is no question the Toyota FJ Cruiser turned a lot of heads when it was first launched and now, for fans, the news is Toyota SA is evaluating the latest generation version just launched in Japan for the local market.

Built on the same IMV platform that hosts the Hilux, Fortuner and Innova (which we do not get locally), the new FJ Cruiser is a tad longer than the Corolla Cross at 4 575 mm and the wheelbase is 270 mm shorter than Prado – very much a compact SUV.

First launched in 1951 as the Toyota BJ, the latest iteration holds true to the concept with bold, boxy stying, short overhangs and flared fenders, while incoporating modern tech inside and under the skin. A shorter wheelbase improves maneuverability, while high ground clearance and robust chassis engineering deliver the performance expected of a true Land Cruiser.

Safety is bolstered by the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite, featuring advanced driver assistance systems such as the Pre-Collision Safety System.

Due for actual launch in Japan early next year, the FJ will be powered by the 2,7-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine (2TR-FE) that we know and which produces 120 kW and 246 Nm to all 4 wheels via a 6-speed ‘Super ECT’ (electronically controlled transmission).
