The latest iteration of the Volkswagen Golf, first showcased at February’s Volkswagen Indaba in Kariega, has officially arrived in showrooms across South Africa. This launch marks a nod to the model’s storied legacy while introducing contemporary upgrades tailored to modern drivers.

The Golf’s South African journey began in 1978 with the Mk1, assembled locally at the Kariega plant. Its reputation for durability and accessible pricing earned it a loyal following. Subsequent generations, including the Mk2 (1984), Mk3 (1993), and Mk4 (1999), built on this foundation, with the latter becoming a standout in sales. Over decades, the model evolved with advancements in technology and safety, culminating in the seventh generation’s refined approach in 2013.

The eighth-generation Golf, introduced locally in 2021, initially omitted the fan-favourite 1.4 TSI engine. Now, the updated 2025 model sees its return, pairing the 110 kW powerplant with an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission. The engine delivers 250 Nm of torque between 1 500 r/min and 4 000 r/min, achieving a fuel consumption rate of 6,3 l/100 km and a 0–100 km/h sprint in 8,5 seconds.

Visually, the new Golf sports a sharper front fascia and redesigned LED lighting, including an illuminated Volkswagen badge – a first for the model. The IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, optional on higher trims, extend visibility up to 500 metres. Inside, a 10-inch digital cockpit and 10,3-inch infotainment system anchor a tech-focused cabin, complemented by wireless connectivity and ambient lighting.
