Nissan appears to have to have given itself the proverbial kick in the butt even as controversy still rages about potential plant closures, including its Rosslyn facility near Pretoria, with two new model launches – the much-revised Leaf electric car and now the comprehensively redesigned Patrol Nismo.

Nismo, representing Nissan Motorsports, leverages decades of motorsport heritage. The division focuses on applying high-performance engineering and innovation to Nissan vehicles. The Patrol Nismo specifically targets merging SUV robustness with track-inspired precision.

A dedicated team of engineers, selected for their high-performance expertise, worked exclusively on this project. Their goal was to realise the most capable Patrol variant to date, resulting in substantial advancements across performance and design.

Key enhancements include a specially tuned twin-turbo V6 engine delivering region-exclusive power outputs, optimised aerodynamics and distinctive new styling. A retuned suspension system and a more pronounced exhaust note further heighten the driving dynamics. Signature Nismo design cues underscore its motorsport lineage.

Thierry Sabbagh, Divisional Vice President & President – Middle East, KSA, CIS – Nissan & INFINITI, stated: "Our customers have consistently valued the Patrol Nismo's blend of performance, exclusivity and craftsmanship since its 2015 debut. This all-new model was developed from the ground up to deliver a sports car sensation while retaining an SUV's commanding presence."

Power output will be tailored to specific regions but the actual launch, which took place in the Middle East, sees the Patrol Nismo generates 369 kW and 700 Nm of torque in Sport Mode. This specific tuning, derived from regional customer feedback, represents the highest output globally for Nissan's VR35DDTT engine – actual specifications for South Africa will be revealed closer to launch..

The powerplant, assembled at Nissan's Iwaki Plant in Japan, features a Nismo-red cover and commemorative plate. It pairs with a recalibrated 9-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters.

Engineering refinements focus on enhancing both performance and driver confidence. A new front bumper design channels cool air to the brakes, reducing disc temperatures by 6%. Rear layered air diffusers optimise aerodynamics, improving high-speed stability and on-road handling.

The exterior presents a dramatic reinterpretation of Nissan's V-Motion grille with a three-dimensional honeycomb mesh, enhancing radiator airflow. Grille-side air curtains manage airflow around the front wheels, reducing lift and increasing downforce. Aerodynamic elements continue at the rear with an extended spoiler, side air splitters, layered diffusers, and air outlets, collectively improving grip. Signature Nismo red accents and a Formula E-inspired rear fog lamp emphasise the motorsport connection.

The cabin employs a black-and-red theme with contrast stitching, metallic accents, red decorative finishers, leather and suede-touch materials. Sports seats feature honeycomb quilting, embroidered Nismo logos, red seat belts, a red start/stop button, carbon fibre-inspired surfaces and aluminium pedals.

The driving dynamics benefit from Nismo-tuned E-Dampers within a recalibrated suspension. These adjust damping in real-time, improving responsiveness and stability. The electronic power steering is also specifically tuned for this model. A Nismo-tuned exhaust system provides a deeper acoustic character, augmented inside by Active Sound Enhancement (ASE).

Forged 22-inch alloy wheels, co-developed with RAYS, feature a unique 9-spoke Nismo design. They are 23% lighter than the base model's wheels, improving lateral stiffness and brake cooling. Paired with high-performance tyres and refined Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), they enhance cornering grip and overall high-speed stability.

Aimed squarely at the likes of the Toyota Hilux GR-S, it remains to be seen if this can re-ignite some of the Nissan passion that used to be prevalent in South Africa.
