Omoda and Jaecoo have officially launched their new plug-in hybrid SUVs locally: the premium Omoda C9 PHEV and the accessible Jaecoo J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System). This signals a notable commitment to New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in the South African market.
The C9 PHEV marks a key step for Omoda. Positioned as a luxury plug-in hybrid, it blends electric efficiency with petrol range. Hans Greyling, General Manager for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, stated: "The C9 PHEV offers a new approach to efficient local motoring. It’s for drivers embracing electric mobility who also want performance, elegance, and safety. It provides electric driving for daily use and petrol power for longer journeys."

Its powertrain combines an electric motor and petrol engine, delivering 440 kW and 915 Nm. Drivers can access up to 150 km of electric range, suitable for many commutes, before the petrol engine engages. Combined range exceeds 1 100 km, with official fuel consumption from 1,4 l/100 km. The 34,5 kWh battery charges fully in about 5,5 hours using a home Wall Box. A 70 kW DC fast charger can boost it from 30% to 80% in roughly 25 minutes.
Exclusive to the Explore trim, the C9 PHEV features a diamond grille, LED lighting, and 20-inch alloys. Sporty red brake callipers, a panoramic sunroof, and rear privacy glass add to its presence. Colour options include Cosmic Black, Meteorite Grey, Moonlight White, and Quantum Grey, with a two-tone black roof available on some models.

Inside, the cabin features Black/Light Brown Nappa leather seats. The driver's seat has six-way electric adjustment, the passenger's four-way. Both front seats are heated and ventilated, with a heated steering wheel. Rear seats offer electric backrest adjustment and heating. Dual-zone climate control, rear air-con controls, and heated/cooled armrest storage are included. Acoustic glass reduces noise. Jaecoo expands its J7 range with the J7 SHS plug-in hybrid, aiming to make the tech more accessible. It combines a 1,5-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor, outputting about 265 kW, managed by a 3-gear Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. It offers a 90 km electric range and an estimated 1 200 km combined range. Fuel consumption is under 5,0 l/100 km overall, potentially near 1,5 l/100 km with electric use. The 18,3 kWh LFP battery supports 40 kW DC fast charging (30%-80% in ~20 minutes).
Visually, it retains the ‘waterfall’ grille and gains unique 19-inch alloys. The interior includes leather trim, ambient lighting, a large infotainment screen, heads-up display, wireless smartphone integration, and an eight-speaker Sony system.
