The local automotive market is poised for significant change following a series of global product unveilings from several brands, each promising to bring a fresh approach to mobility when they arrive on South African shores.

Central to the announcements is the reveal of the Chery HIMLA EV, an all-electric bakkie that maintains the robust exterior and dimensions of its internal combustion sibling. Its power comes from an 88 kWh battery pack, which is anticipated to provide a driving range of up to 510 kilometres. This model aims to combine zero-emission efficiency with the professional-grade capability essential for both commercial and private use.

Verene Petersen, National Brand and Marketing Manager at Chery South Africa, says: “In South Africa, bakkies are more than just vehicles. The HIMLA, scheduled for a 2026 local introduction, represents an evolution of the bakkie, offering a new proposition for drivers who require toughness, versatility, and innovation.”

Chery also used its global platform to introduce a novel vehicle concept: a transformable multi-SUV. Developed from extensive international user research, this concept is built around nine common family scenarios, from daily commuting to camping trips.

It is designed to shift between six different configurations, including a seven-seat family mode, a double-cab pickup, and a camper van setup. The company has initiated a global co-creation project, inviting future users to contribute to the design and naming process ahead of its planned 2026 release.

In a separate showcase at the Festival of Motoring 2025, BAIC South Africa presented the new B30 SUV. The model, which has already been launched in several international markets, will be offered in South Africa with a choice of petrol and self-charging hybrid powertrains.

The hybrid variants are particularly notable, with the top-tier all-wheel-drive model producing a combined 301 kW and 685 Nm of torque. The B30 features a modern cabin with a 14,6-inch infotainment display and a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Local assembly of the B30 is planned for BAIC's Coega facility in Gqeberha following its national launch.

Meanwhile, the OMODA brand has globally unveiled the C4, an evolution of its earlier C3 model. The vehicle continues with the brand's Cyber Mecha design philosophy, characterised by sharp lighting signatures and a muscular profile.

Hans Greyling, General Manager of OMODA & JAECOO South Africa, says: “Cross-border design challenges us to rethink established norms. The C4 is built for lifestyle adventurers who question convention, and its innovation is rooted in a deep understanding of the people we design for.”

The C4 will be available with both internal combustion and hybrid engines upon its anticipated South African arrival in the second half of 2026.

Further expanding the concept of personalisation, the iCAUR brand is preparing to enter the local market with a focus on customisation. Its V23 and V27 models are built on a modular system that allows owners to easily modify body panels, lighting, and accessories.

Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for iCAUR South Africa, said: “South African drivers appreciate vehicles that express who they are. Our ‘Born To Play’ approach turns the vehicle into a canvas for personal expression, creating a driving experience that feels connected and full of character.”
