Production of the new, fully electric Volvo ES90 has commenced for European markets, a key step in the Swedish automaker’s transition to an all-electric future. While the order books are open in Europe, Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed local availability is set for 2026.
"With production of the ES90 now underway, we're moving from concept to reality," commented Grant Locke, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa. "This isn't just another electric Volvo; it's our most advanced sedan yet, built with 800-volt charging, next-generation safety, and a design that redefines what premium electric mobility looks like. The ES90 shows where Volvo is headed—and in 2026, South Africa will see that vision on its roads."

The ES90 is the first Volvo to feature an 800-volt architecture, which facilitates a longer driving range and significantly faster charging times compared to the company’s previous electric models. Volvo describes the car’s design as a new segment blend, combining the elegance of a sedan with the adaptability of a fastback and the interior space of an SUV.
Built at Volvo’s climate-neutral energy plant in Chengdu, China, the ES90 is also positioned as a sustainable choice. According to the company, it has a lower carbon footprint than previous Volvo models. The vehicle’s technology is powered by next-generation computing, allowing its features to be improved over time through remote software updates.
