Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has announced its support for a literacy initiative spearheaded by its long-standing conservation partner, the Owl Rescue Centre. The backing involves funding the printing of 1 000 copies of the children's book ‘Wild Adventures with Lazzy the Otter’, authored by Danelle Murray, co-founder of the Owl Rescue Centre.

This book sponsorship forms a key part of the Owl Rescue Centre's ongoing school outreach programme. The project focuses on nurturing environmental understanding and conservation awareness among young learners. Copies of the book will be distributed to school libraries and communities facing socio-economic challenges, aiming to develop an appreciation for nature through accessible reading material.

Tasneem Lorgat, General Manager for Marketing Communications at TSAM, linked the initiative to the company’s broader principles. "Toyota South Africa Motors’ backing for this project reflects our ongoing commitment to Corporate Citizenship and environmental responsibility. Partnering with the Owl Rescue Centre on this literacy drive aligns with our focus on sustainability and community development. We see storytelling as an effective method for inspiring positive change in young minds."

‘Wild Adventures with Lazzy the Otter’ uses the journey of its otter protagonist to introduce children to South Africa's diverse wildlife and the significance of protecting it. The book combines narrative with illustrations designed to engage young readers and stimulate an interest in the natural world.

Danelle Murray, author and Owl Rescue Centre co-founder, stressed the critical link between education and lasting conservation efforts. "The impact of Toyota South Africa Motors' sponsorship extends well beyond the physical books," Murray explained. "In many underserved communities, access to compelling educational resources is scarce. These 1,000 copies offer not just stories, but opportunities for learning, imagination, and forging a connection with the surrounding natural environment – an environment these children will ultimately inherit and whose challenges they will need to address."
