November is an important month in the growth of BYD in South Africa with the impending launch of the Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid, framing its arrival as a significant step in the company’s broader plan to address local energy and transport challenges.
Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director at BYD Auto South Africa, explained the company’s vision extends beyond manufacturing vehicles. “BYD is not just a car manufacturer. We’re a technology company focused on creating a cleaner, smarter future,” Kweyi says. “The Sea Lion 5 represents how innovation can meet real South African needs, combining energy efficiency, advanced safety, and everyday utility.”

The model is built on BYD’s Dual-Mode Intelligent (DMI) hybrid platform, which is designed to offer electric driving for daily commutes while using a petrol engine for longer journeys, going some way to mitigate range anxiety some drivers associate with pure electric vehicles.
The launch follows a recent visit to Johannesburg by BYD’s Executive Vice President, Stella Li, who used the trip to reaffirm the company’s long-term investment in the South African market. This includes plans for new-energy vehicles, charging infrastructure and partnerships aimed at supporting the country’s shift towards cleaner transport.
Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD South Africa, highlighted the local context for the technology. “South Africa is at a critical juncture. The cost of imported fuel continues to burden households and businesses, while our abundant sunshine remains underutilised.

The Sealion 5 is a family-oriented SUV featuring a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, wireless charging, an intelligent voice control system and a large infotainment screen. Full specifications and pricing will be announced at an official media event in November, with sales commencing at BYD dealerships nationwide thereafter.
