Since first arriving on South African roads in 1969, the Toyota Hilux has become more than just a vehicle; it has woven itself into the fabric of the nation’s driving culture and with it the Legend. First shown as the Legend 35 in 2004, like the mythical Phoenix, a new Legend has arisen every five years and, marking this ongoing story, Toyota South Africa has unveiled the latest chapter: the Hilux Legend 55.

This new special-edition range succeeds previous Legend models and will be available until 2026. Buyers can select from two body styles: the Xtra Cab or the Double Cab. Both variants continue the Legend series' tradition while offering refreshed design and convenience features.

Inside the Legend 55, the cabin balances work-ready toughness with considered refinement. Details such as chrome-branded scuff plates, durable rubber floormats, and sport seats with embroidered headrests signal its limited-production status without compromising its practical character.

Staying connected is facilitated by an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is supported by a nine-speaker JBL audio system, designed to deliver quality sound on every trip.

On the outside, the bakkie presents a purposeful look with exclusive badging, a front bash plate, and a lockable roller shutter. Double Cab models gain additional features like puddle lights that project the Hilux logo and a shark-fin antenna. Practical elements include a rubberised load bay, a styling bar, a detachable tow bar, and a roof ornament.

Power comes from Toyota’s familiar 2,8-litre GD-6 turbo-diesel engine, which generates 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This drivetrain is engineered to provide a blend of performance and efficiency for a variety of driving conditions.

The model will be offered in a choice of ten exterior colours, including Dark Green Mica Metallic and the classic Sand Beige.

Pricing for the Legend 55 line-up starts at R728 300 for the 2.8 GD-6 Xtra Cab AT, rising to R935 900 for the 2.8 GD-6 4x4 Double Cab AT. Every model is sold with a standard nine-service/90 000 km service plan and a 3-year/100 000 km warranty. Extensions for service, maintenance, and warranty are available through Toyota’s dealer network.
