In February last year CHANGECARS broke the story converted right-hand drive cars built by the Sri Lankan based Autogroup International would be coming to South Africa – and now, with the finalisation of an import and distribution deal with Durban outfit, Rospa, cars and ‘trucks’ are on their way, including the iconic Chevrolet Corvette.

The company has already delivered some vehicles into the country and recently commenced production of the right-hand drive Hummer EV SUV, with several factory orders destined for South Africa.

Beyond the Hummer EV, Autogroup International offers an extensive selection of converted American vehicles. This includes models such as the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro muscle cars, alongside a broad range of right-hand drive pickup trucks from Ford, RAM, GMC, and Toyota.

In a separate development, Autogroup International has the right-hand drive conversion of the 2025 Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV. Now available for pre-order across key African right-hand drive markets, including South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Botswana, the Sequoia represents a significant expansion beyond their bakkie conversions like the Toyota Tundra.

"The Toyota Sequoia stands as the most advanced, spacious SUV in Toyota's global portfolio," stated Hill. "Launching it in right-hand drive for Africa is a natural progression from our Tundra programme, offering an alternative for those considering vehicles such as the Land Cruiser or Prado."

Built on Toyota's latest US-engineered platform, the Sequoia measures 5,2 metres long, providing more cabin space, particularly in the second and third rows, compared to the Land Cruiser 300 Series. It is powered by a 3,4-litre twin-turbo V6 hybrid system delivering 325 kW and 790 Nm of torque. Available in TRD Pro (off-road focused) and Capstone (luxury flagship) trims, it features full 4WD capability, advanced infotainment, panoramic moonroofs and seating for up to eight passengers.

Autogroup International emphasises its rigorous conversion process, conducted under ISO 9001:2015 Quality Assurance standards at its Sri Lankan facility. The company utilises advanced CAD, 3D scanning, and mirror-image remanufacturing techniques to ensure OEM-grade quality and safety for all systems, including steering, dashboard electronics, HVAC, and safety features.

Over 30 years, the company has converted approximately 4 500 vehicles and holds government approvals for export to 40 countries.

All converted vehicles, including the Hummer EV, armoured GMCs, and the new Sequoia, are backed by Autogroup International's global total vehicle warranty support, ISO Quality Assurance compliance, and technical support networks, including service agents in South Africa and regional partners.

The Sequoia specifically comes with a 3-year factory-backed warranty and a 100 000 km service kit. Initial production of the right-hand drive Sequoia is limited, with deliveries expected to commence in the coming months.
