Pre-orders for the new Volkswagen T7 Multivan Caravelle are now officially open, following the vehicle’s initial showing at the Volkswagen Group Africa Indaba earlier this year. The announcement marks a new chapter for a nameplate that has been part of the South African landscape for more than seven decades, since the first Kombi rolled off the line in Kariega.
Under the bonnet, the T7 Multivan Caravelle employs a 1,5-litre turbo-charged plug-in hybrid engine working in concert with an electric motor. The combined system output is rated at 180 kW and 350 Nm of torque, with power directed through a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.
The interior is configured with seven individual seats, each mounted on a flexible sliding rail system. This allows occupants to rearrange the cabin layout to accommodate business meetings, family trips, or leisure outings, with a multifunction table adding to the adaptability of the space.
Electric sliding doors and an electric tailgate come as standard, while the three-zone Air Care Climatronic system includes an additional control panel for rear passengers.
Driver and passenger information is displayed via the Digital Cockpit Pro and a 10-inch infotainment system with wireless App-Connect. Ambient lighting offers a choice of 30 colours, with footwell illumination provided for the second row. The leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel features shift paddles for manual gear changes.

Volkswagen has equipped the T7 Multivan Caravelle with a suite of driver assistance systems. These include IQ. Light LED matrix headlamps, Park Assist and Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring. Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go functionality and a speed limiter further contribute to the safety package.
The T7 Multivan Caravelle Style is priced at R1 794 000, inclusive of VAT and emissions tax. The vehicle comes with a 3-year or 120 000 km manufacturer warranty, a 5-year or 100 000 km Easy Drive maintenance plan, and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. Service intervals are set at 15 000 km.
