Following its debut at the Volkswagen Indaba earlier this year, the all-new Volkswagen Tayron has officially arrived in South African showrooms. The new seven-seater sport utility vehicle slots into the local lineup between the Tiguan and the Touareg.

Manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany, the Tayron adopts several technology systems first developed for the larger Touareg. These include the interactive IQ. LIGHT HD matrix headlights and seats featuring a pneumatic 10-chamber pressure point massage function.

Measuring 4,79 m in length, the Tayron presents a clean SUV design. Its front end is marked by LED headlights and an illuminated Volkswagen badge, while the rear features a full-length horizontal LED light bar and a similarly lit logo. The interior is appointed with high-quality finishes, with available materials including ArtVelours Eco microfibre and illuminated trims, depending on the chosen specification.

The model range consists of three derivatives: Tayron Base, Life and R-Line. The five-seater Base model includes Eco LED headlights, Park Assist, a blind spot monitor, a 12,9-inch infotainment system and 18-inch Bologna alloy wheels. The Tayron Life adds a three-zone climate control system, 10-colour ambient lighting, nine crash bags and digital instruments. It also features LED headlights with automatic main beam control and illuminated front and rear logos.

A comprehensive suite of assistance systems is standard across all models. This includes adaptive cruise control, a lane change system, lane keeping assist, an automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, Park Assist Plus, a rear-view camera and an exit warning system designed to help prevent doors from being opened into the path of approaching traffic.

The sporty R-Line derivative builds on the Life specification with sports comfort seats in Varenna leather, leather applications on the dashboard and doors, and 19-inch Coventry alloy wheels. It is also equipped with LED Plus headlights with dynamic cornering light, 3D LED taillights and 30-colour ambient lighting.

For further individualisation, an optional Black Style package is available for the R-Line. This includes high-gloss black exterior trim and roof rails, plus 20-inch alloy wheels. Other optional packages allow for upgrades such as a leather interior, a navigation infotainment system, and an IQ Package which adds Travel Assist and the LED Matrix Headlights.

Further optional equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, a 700W Harman Kardon sound system, and electrically adjustable ergo Active Plus seats with massage and ventilation functions.

Powering the new Tayron is a 1,4-litre TSI engine producing 110 kW. It is paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission and delivers a maximum torque of 250 Nm between 1 500 and 3 500 r/min.
