Volkswagen’s new Transporter lineup is officially available in South Africa, and it’s clear the brand is doubling down on functional upgrades and driver-focused features. The latest generation doesn’t just pay lip service to improvement—it actually brings tangible changes that should catch the eye of business owners and fleet managers alike.
Under the hood, the Transporter range that incorporates Panel Van, Crew Cab and two grade variants of the people mover, now offers three 2,0-litre TDI engines: 81 kW, 110 kW, and 125 kW to suit user needs.
Businesses can select between a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission, depending on their operational needs. And for those requiring extra traction—construction firms, or anyone heading off the beaten path—the 125 kW variant comes exclusively with the automatic and will soon offer the option of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

This focus on powertrain variety is a strategic move, positioning the Transporter as a versatile tool that can be tailored to a wide range of commercial applications.
Volkswagen has also revamped its standard features package, and it now comes with LED headlights with Light Assist, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a sizable 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety has taken a front seat as well, with Lane Assist, Front Assist emergency braking and dynamic road sign display included. The electronic parking brake, now located conveniently on the dashboard, frees up space and makes moving through the cabin less of a hassle—especially in busy delivery environments.

The cabin itself has been thoughtfully redesigned. The new cockpit layout puts digital screens right in the driver’s eyeline for quick glances, reducing distraction and fatigue. Seating options range from basic four-way adjustment—ideal for fleet use—to more premium, electrically-adjustable eight-way seats for businesses that prioritise driver comfort.
Storage is another area where VW has delivered: multiple compartments and cup holders throughout the cabin mean operators have room for everything from paperwork to personal items, supporting both organization and efficiency.
On the utility front, the Transporter now offers increased payload and cargo space, both key considerations for commercial buyers. The long wheelbase panel van can accommodate up to three Euro pallets with a stowage volume of 6,8 cubic meters. Payload is up to 1,33 tonnes, and towing capacity for braked trailers has increased to 2,8 tonnes—an important improvement for companies transporting heavier equipment or goods. These upgrades collectively translate to more capability on the job, directly impacting productivity and operational flexibility.
The exterior has also grown to match these internal upgrades. The short wheelbase variant now comes in at 5 050 mm, while the long wheelbase stretches to 5 45 0mm. Volkswagen’s signature design language remains intact: clean lines, modern LED headlights, and a familiar silhouette that projects a professional image for any business – even though the underpinnings are all from alliance partner Ford (as in the Torneo and Transit)..
