Volkswagen has released a special edition of the Polo GTI, called the Edition 20, with only 400 units set to reach South African buyers. The car arrives as the local motoring community marks 20 years since the first Polo GTI went on sale in the country back in 2006.
That original model, which was the second generation of the Polo GTI internationally, used a 1,8-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 110 kW. It helped establish a following for compact, performance focused hatchbacks in a market that had long reserved the GTI badge for the Golf.

The timing of the Edition 20 also lines up with two other milestones. The Polo nameplate celebrated its 50th anniversary globally in 2025, and Plant Kariega – the only factory in the Volkswagen production network that builds the Polo GTI – marks 30 years of Polo manufacturing in South Africa in 2026.
After the 2006 introduction, Volkswagen brought out an all new Polo GTI in 2011 powered by a twin charged 1,4-litre engine. That was followed in 2015 by a third generation model with a 1,8-litre turbo-charged TSI unit. According to Volkswagen, the continued demand for a compact performance hatch has kept the Polo GTI relevant, making a commemorative edition a logical step.
Inside the Edition 20, the cabin gets several GTI specific touches without being overdone. There is a leather wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel and Digital Cockpit Pro. Privacy glass runs from the B pillar backwards, including the rear window.
The dashboard, centre console, and door trim panels are finished in piano black. A dashboard decal carries the ‘20 GTI’ lettering, and the front floor mats come with ‘20 GTI’ embroidery and red stitching. Rear floor mats have red binding stitching without embroidery. The sports leather seats feature red vinyl accents.
On the outside, the Edition 20 gets a black roof and 18-inch Faro alloy wheels described as smoked clear on bright machined rims. The exterior mirror housings are painted black, and there are front and rear door decals showing the number 20. Buyers can choose from three paint colours: Crystal Ice Blue Metallic, Kings Red Metallic, or Ascot Grey. For cars finished in Crystal Ice Blue or Ascot Grey, the rear diffuser is painted in Kings Red Metallic.

Under the bonnet, the Polo GTI Edition 20 uses a 2,0-litre TSI engine that delivers 147 kW and 320 Nm of torque from 1 500 r/min to 4 350 r/min. Power goes to the front wheels through a six speed DSG gearbox. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in 6,7 seconds and has a top speed of 237 km/h.
The standard Polo GTI is priced at R 605 700, and the Edition 20 sits within that range. The car comes with a 3-year or 120 000 km warranty, a 5-year or 90 000 km EasyDrive Service Plan, and a 12 year anti corrosion warranty. The service interval is set at 15 000 km.
