The Cyberster’s sculpted sheet metal is eye-catching. Notable design elements include ‘Storm Eye’ headlamps; arrow-shaped taillamps, which, MG says, draw inspiration from the Union Jack; an expansive rear LED light bar, and 20-inch alloy wheels. The latter items are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber.
There are few cars that turn as many heads as the Cyberster. However, if the aforementioned items didn’t quite catch the eyes of passersby, the next element, arguably the Cyberster’s pièce de résistance, will — its automatically opening scissor doors. A welcome addition, the doors are fitted with sensors to avoid them hitting, say, your garage wall or another car after having parked in a tight space.
Compact by modern standards, the Cyberster’s bodywork is slightly larger than that of the BMW Z4 and Porsche 718 Boxster. The MG measures 4 535 mm front to rear, 1 913 mm in width, and 1 329 mm in height. The wheelbase spans 2 690 mm.
The cabin feels snug, though. However, the cockpit wraps around the driver, as it should in a sports car. The interior features a quartet of digital displays. Flanking a 10.25-inch instrument cluster is a duo of touch-enabled, 7.0-inch units — for infotainment, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and vehicle-related information, respectively — housed within the same panel and curved towards the driver. The fourth display, sited next to the drive selector in the centre console, operates climate control and several vehicle functions.
However, the software isn’t that intuitive. In addition, the 360-degree surround-view camera feed is (rather curiously) displayed on the right-hand-side touchscreen, instead of the more centrally sited item as it would be traditionally, and this does take some time getting used to.
Locally, the Cyberster is only available in pinnacle, dual electric-motor guise, which combines the rear-wheel-driven derivative’s single (250 kW/475 N.m) synchronous unit with a (150 kW/250 N.m) front-mounted item for peak outputs of 375 kW and 725 N.m. Power and twisting force are sent to all four wheels.
