Datsun
Datsun was the budget division of Nissan offering a well priced decently specced product
The brand was discontinued in April 2022 but the name will remain on SA roads for many years
If you on a tight budget the Datsun Go is a very decent product to consider

Structural safety was always a concern with Go, as it was engineered and built to budget. Earlier versions with ABS or airbags are to be avoided.
Best buy is a higher trim version, with ABS, ESP and airbags.
Build quality isn’t amazing, but with a low electronics threshold, they are easy to maintain and keep going.
Naturally aspirated engines are slow at Gauteng altitudes. Mechanically, the 5-speed manual gearbox versions are best. The CVT transmissions can become costly to maintain and replace at higher mileages.

The Go+ was a favourite amongst low-cost taxi and Uber operators. That means most are very high-mileage vehicles.
If you live on the Highveld, power-to-weight ratio becomes a real problem. Especially if the Go+ is used as intended, carrying seven adult occupants.
Datsun’s 1.2-litre petrol engine produces only 50kW. And at altitude, you lose a fair percentage of that power due to lower oxygen density. The result is that Go+ has almost no overtaking performance at altitude, when fully loaded.
Reasonably simple to keep going, mechanically. But the CVT transmissions are vulnerable at higher mileages. So get a 5-speed manual Go+, if you really need a 7-seater bargain transport solution.
