The 2008 looks more distinctive than anything German. But the design is also more original than Asian sub-compact crossover-SUVs.
Turbopetrol engine and 6-speed auto balance the need for performance and economy. Integrated ‘wet’ timing belts require careful maintenance to avoid engine disasters at high mileages.
Excellent exterior design repeated inside. But the tiny thick-rim steering wheel isn’t for everyone. Some find it tricky to twirl between the hands, lock-to-lock. Tall drivers find it obscures the instrumentation.
Like all Peugeots, the 2008 has excellent ride quality. Limited dealer coverage outside the big cities, but a great car for buyers who want something distinctive that is also great to drive.

Landtrek’s engineering is by Changan, with Peugeot’s design department doing a brilliant job on the exterior. Compared to overdesigned Chinese bakkies, Landtrek’s traditional grille and harmonised details make it look like a bakkie should.
Lots of Peugeot passenger-car switchgear, tabs, and buttons inside, making the Landtrek one of the better bakkie cabins for comfort and ergonomics.
Despite having a longer loadbed than other bakkies (including Hilux and Ranger), Landtrek is outranked by its rivals on engine spec. The 1.9 turbodiesel engine’s 110kW and 350Nm just can’t compete with other 2- and 2.4-litre turbodiesels
GWM’s P300 offers a lot more performance and value for the same price. Landtrek’s mechanical twin from Changan, the Hunter, is vastly cheaper.
