In response to a growing influx of cheap imported and counterfeit vehicle components into the South African market, Hyundai Automotive South Africa is reinforcing its Hyundai Approved Repairer Programme (HARP). The initiative is positioned as a direct countermeasure to practices that can compromise vehicle safety and performance.
The local motor industry has repeatedly raised concerns about the proliferation of substandard parts. Recent industry reports, including those from the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM), detail how these components, often priced significantly lower than genuine parts, fail to meet the required specifications. This trend poses a substantial risk to motorists.

Sam Matlhola, Parts Director at Hyundai Automotive South Africa, emphasised the programme's role. “Through HARP, Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s customers gain access to a national network of approved repairers, each vetted for compliance with our strict repair protocols,” Matlhola stated.
These certified repair centres are required to use only genuine Hyundai parts and adhere to the manufacturer's specific repair processes. This approach is designed to ensure that vehicles retain their designed performance, safety ratings, and resale value after a repair.
“By insisting on approved repair centres and genuine parts, we are protecting our customers from risks associated with off-market components and non-compliant repairs,” Matlhola added. Each genuine part is engineered and tested for a specific vehicle model, whereas the introduction of a substandard part can affect critical safety systems, durability, and long-term reliability.

Supporting the operational side, Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, pointed to the company’s parts supply chain and research and development quality protocols. He noted that a majority of all major structural vehicle repairs within the HARP network are completed within 30 days, a benchmark linked to the use of genuine, readily available components.
“Our commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence, supported by our parts supply rate and stringent R&D quality protocols, reaffirms why only genuine parts should be used,” Anderson concluded.
