Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have introduced the Integrated Greenhouse Gas Information System (IGIS), a platform designed to monitor, measure and manage carbon emissions across the entire lifecycle of their vehicles.

The system utilises the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to provide a detailed analysis of emissions at every stage of a vehicle’s lifecycle. This approach ensures accurate and consistent data collection, enabling the automakers to meticulously evaluate their environmental impact.

IGIS tracks energy consumption across global production sites and maintains an extensive record of carbon management activities. Furthermore, the platform gathers LCA data from suppliers and component manufacturers to calculate carbon footprints and predict greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain.

A notable feature of IGIS is its use of blockchain technology, which safeguards the integrity and security of the data. This advanced feature ensures transparency and prevents any potential tampering or falsification, bolstering confidence in the system’s reliability.

“With IGIS, we are taking a pivotal step towards our goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045,” says Eunsook Jin, Executive Vice President and Head of ICT Division at Hyundai Motor and Kia. “This platform represents a transformative innovation in the automotive sector, enabling us to foster a responsible and sustainable value chain.”

The launch of IGIS builds on Hyundai and Kia’s earlier environmental initiatives, including the Supplier CO2 Emission Monitoring System (SCEMS) introduced in 2023. By integrating existing systems, IGIS streamlines data management and enhances operational efficiency, marking a significant advancement in the companies’ sustainability strategies.

In addition to facilitating compliance with international environmental regulations, IGIS supports certifications such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the RE100 initiative. Its ability to consolidate and manage emissions data positions Hyundai and Kia to respond proactively to evolving global sustainability standards.
